The Azimut Benetti Group, world leader in the production of super yachts, is the first company in the nautical sector to have signed an agreement with Mive Eco for the supply of exhaust systems equipped with the SCR system for the reduction of harmful emissions generated by propulsion. Mive Eco, a company already world leader in the production of exhaust gas systems, starting this year will integrate its systems with the SCR systems of Hug Engineering, a company also a leader in its market segment.

An agreement with the world’s leading manufacturer of super yachts which is set up as a real innovation for the sector. In fact, the collaboration with two excellences such as Mive Eco and Hug Engineering will allow Azimut Benetti to guarantee the possibility of purchasing a “low emission” version for its models over 24 metres.

Mive Eco has integrated this latest generation SCR into its plants, offering Azimut Benetti a complete system of all connection pipes, risers, support structures and highly performing insulation in order to guarantee perfect operation, compliance with back pressure, surface temperature on the components and the safety of the yacht, despite the limited space available.

The need is to meet the limit level for NOx emissions defined by IMO as “Tier III” which, starting from 2021, has been extended to yachts of less than 500 gross tonnage and longer than 24 meters, and has become a mandatory requirement to navigate in ECAs (Controlled Emissions Areas).

Years before the entry into force of the new emission limits, Azimut-Benetti had asked its supplier of exhaust lines Mive Eco to integrate an “SCR” in the engine room for at least 8 yacht models, without any reduction of the areas habitable space or garage volume and impact on engine power.

Mive Eco had taken up the challenge by involving Hug Engineering, its historical partner, which has been supplying its best-in-class products to the main shipyards in the European area since 2016, when the IMO TIER III emissions standard had entered into force for all yachts over 500 gross tonnage.

Mive Eco reworked its exhaust systems and simultaneously Hug Engineering finalized the development of a completely new “CCV” (Cordierite Coated Vanadium) catalyst, which, after 3 years of laboratory and bench tests, was “deliberated” managing to meet performance targets in the limited space of an engine room.

Once it was understood that the system could work properly, Hug Engineering started the certification process in order to obtain an EAPP certificate compliant with the IMO TIER III standard based on the IMO Tier II engine. In this way it is possible to use SCR in the ECA area and possibly use the Tier II version engine in areas where it is not yet easy to refuel AdBlue (Urea) on board.

To date it is possible to state that the joint efforts undertaken between 2020 and 2021 by the three companies involved, Azimut Benetti, Mive Eco and Hug Engineering, have made it possible to achieve the objective of having a feasible solution both technically and commercially, which can be immediately offered to any customer interested in buying an ecological yacht, having full freedom to sail anywhere in the world and being able to count on the full value of the vessel at the time of resale.

Il Gruppo Azimut Benetti, leader mondiale nella produzione di super yacht, è la prima azienda del settore nautico ad aver siglato un accordo con Mive Eco per la fornitura di impianti di scarico dotati di sistema SCR per l’abbattimento delle emissioni nocive generate dai motori di propulsione. Mive Eco, azienda già leader mondiale nella produzione di impianti gas di scarico, a partire da quest’anno integrerà i propri impianti con i sistemi SCR della Hug Engineering, azienda anch’essa leader nel proprio segmento di mercato.

Un accordo con il primo produttore mondiale di super yacht che si configura come una vera e propria innovazione per il settore. Infatti la collaborazione con due eccellenze quali Mive Eco e Hug Engineering consentirà ad Azimut Benetti di garantire la possibilità di acquisto di una versione “low emission” per i propri modelli oltre i 24 metri.

Hug Engineering ha sviluppato, testato e certificato una nuova versione del suo modulo Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), in grado di adattarsi alla sala macchine degli yacht dislocanti, semidislocanti e plananti del Gruppo Azimut-Benetti, riducendo al minimo gli ingombri.

Mive Eco ha provveduto ad integrare questo SCR di ultima generazione nei propri impianti offrendo ad Azimut Benetti un sistema completo di tutte le condotte di connessione, riser, strutture di sostegno e coibentazioni altamente performanti al fine di garantire un perfetto funzionamento, il rispetto dei valori di contropressione, di temperatura superficiale sui componenti e la sicurezza dello yacht, nonostante i ridotti spazi a disposizione.

La necessità è quella di soddisfare il livello limite di emissioni di NOx definito da IMO come “Tier III” che, a partire dal 2021, si è esteso agli yacht di stazza lorda inferiore a 500 e più lunghi di 24 metri, ed è diventato un requisito obbligatorio per navigare nelle ECA (Aree ad emissioni controllate).

Con anni di anticipo rispetto all’entrata in vigore dei nuovi limiti di emissioni Azimut-Benetti aveva chiesto al suo fornitore di linee di scarico Mive Eco di integrare un “SCR” nella sala macchine per almeno 8 modelli di yacht, senza alcuna riduzione delle aree abitabili o di volume del garage e impatto sulla potenza dei motori.

Mive Eco aveva raccolto la sfida coinvolgendo Hug Engineering, sua partner storico, che fornisce i suoi prodotti best-in-class ai principali cantieri navali dell’area europea sin dal 2016, quando lo standard di emissioni IMO TIER III era entrato in vigore per tutti gli yacht sopra le 500 tonnellate di stazza lorda.

Mive Eco ha rielaborato i propri impianti di scarico e simultaneamente Hug Engineering ha finalizzato lo sviluppo di un catalizzatore “CCV” (Cordierite Coated Vanadium) completamente nuovo, che, dopo ben 3 anni di prove di laboratorio e al banco, è stato “deliberato” riuscendo a soddisfare i target di prestazioni nello spazio limitato di una sala macchine.

Mive Eco e Hug dopo mesi di studi hanno elaborato le prime versioni di sistemi gas di scarico integrati con SCR compatto adatto a yacht oltre i 24 metri e sotto le 500 GT.

Una volta compreso che il sistema poteva funzionare correttamente, Hug Engineering ha avviato il processo di certificazione per poter ottenere un certificato EAPP conforme allo strandard IMO TIER III basato su motore IMO Tier II. In questo modo è possibile utilizzare SCR nella zona ECA ed eventualmente utilizzare il motore in versione Tier II in aree dove non sia ancora agevole il rifornimento di AdBlue (Urea) a bordo.

Ad oggi è possibile affermare che gli sforzi congiunti intrapresi fra il 2020 ed il 2021 dalle tre società coinvolte, Azimut Benetti, Mive Eco e Hug Engineering, hanno permesso di raggiungere l’obiettivo di avere una soluzione percorribile sia tecnicamente sia commercialmente, che può essere immediatamente offerta a qualsiasi cliente interessato ad acquistare uno yacht ecologico, avendo la piena libertà di navigare in qualsiasi parte del mondo e potendo contare sul pieno valore dell’imbarcazione al momento della rivendita.
